Monthly Salary to Farmers : A Way out of Financial Struggles due to Crop Loss.
With the desperate condition of especially small scale farmers and with no sign of a Minimum Support Price this is another idea to help farmers with meeting their costs.
We are living in the era of climate change and in the recent years we have experienced such occurrences such as unseasonal rainfall, extreme rainfall, drought, tsunami and unseasonal weather changes. All these have had a severe impact on agriculture and it has led to large scale crop loss and damage and ultimately huge financial losses for the farmers. In this light we are proposing to start salaries for farmers on a monthly basis. This could be a minimum monthly salary to small, marginalized and land less farmers on the basis of land holding and BPL (below Poverty Line) status. There could be an arrangement made at the Panchayat level for providing these wages. This will certainly help ease the burden and make their minds free of crop loss due to natural calamities like drought, flood, and tsunami. The salary amount could be taken from the farmers in the form of purchasing grains for primary school mid-day meal, Anganwadi, district hospital, district jail etc. and in case of loss due to natural calamities the same would stop considering the extent of the calamity.
The concept of fixed monthly salary would also able to minimize the farmer’s suicide in states like Karnataka and Maharashtra and would give a social as well as economic security to the farmers. Fortunately there are farmers in Kerala who are receiving a monthly salary. So its important to study this model and see what can be applied in various projects
